Chronic Sinusitis
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Surgical intervention is considered when medical management is insufficient to address symptoms, side effects of medical management make continued treatment difficult, or when intra-cranial or intra-orbital complications arise
· Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is based on the principle that enlargement of the natural sinus ostia and restoration of drainage can eliminate chronic infection and reverse inflammatory changes in the sinus mucosa
· By enlarging the sinus ostia and facilitating drainage, the primary pathogenic factors can be addressed
- FESS has a 90% success rate in decreasing frequency and severity of sinusitis symptoms
- FESS has been shown to improve control of asthma
- FESS can lessen the impact of allergies on nasal breathing and other rhinitis symptoms
- FESS results in decreased sinus pain, decreased nasal congestion, decreased rhinorrhea, and decreased frequency of infection
- Frequency of antibiotic use decreases, and the majority of patients have significant improvement in their symptoms within a matter of weeks
