Balloon SinuplastyTM

Balloon SinuplastyTM is the next evolution of endoscopic sinus surgery. Balloon SinuplastyTM products are endoscopic, catheter-based devices specifically designed to navigate the tortuous openings into the paranasal sinuses. A Sinus Balloon Catheter is used to dilate blocked sinus ostia, in many cases without tissue or bone removal. The design of these devices gives the surgeon the opportunity to open the sinuses and promote aeration and drainage with minimal discomfort, almost no bleeding, and little recovery time.

The opening attained by the Balloon SinuplastyTM system is durable and essentially achieves the same goals as conventional sinus surgery but without bone and tissue removal. Post-procedure, the size of the dilated opening for the frontal, maxillary or sphenoid sinuses is approximately that of the nominal diameter of the selected Sinus Balloon Catheter (about 5 mm).

The Balloon SinuplastyTM devices are effective endoscopic tools and may be used with other medical therapies (such as allergy treatment) or traditional functional endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) techniques. Additionally, using these devices does not limit future treatment options for patients with progressive mucosal disease.

Patients with recurrent acute sinus infections and normal CT scans between these illnesses or those with chronic sinus pressure and weather-related sinus headaches and minimal mucosal disease on CT may benefit from dilation of the sinus ostia. Each patient suffering from sinusitis is different, however, and only after an appropriate examination, CT imaging, and discussions with the patient can the use of the Balloon SinuplastyTM system be considered.

Using the Balloon SinuplastyTM system, your physician gently places a Sinus Guide Catheter and a flexible Sinus Guidewire through the nostrils to access the target sinus. Next, a Sinus Balloon Catheter is advanced over the Sinus Guidewire.

The Sinus Balloon Catheter is positioned across the blocked ostium and gently inflated.

The Balloon SinuplastyTM system is removed, leaving an open sinus passageway and restoring normal drainage and function.
